3 days and nights of fun in the fields in the beautiful Lake District
Kendal Calling HQ are over the moon to unveil the latest news as the Tim Peaks Diner makes it’s debut at this years festival. Starting life on BBC 6Music, Tim Peaks Diner is the creation of The Charlatans’ frontman Tim Burgess and this year he curates 3 days of music, book readings, live art, DJs, breakfasts, afternoon tea, jukebox jives – not to mention damn good coffee!
Returning to the festival after taking to the main stage last year, Tim Burgess’ Tim Peaks Diner will also serve up Kendal Calling’s exclusive breakfast cereal called Totes Amazeballs, with all profits from the Diner going to the David Lynch Foundation – a charity set up by the award winning film director himself.
Just a taster of the artists set to drop in and perform at Tim Peaks include Edwyn Collins, the Orange Juice legend who will be joining us for a weekend of DJing, drawing and a Q&A session. Edwyn released his last album Losing Sleep in 2010, on which he collaborated with last year’s fantastic festival headliners The Cribs!
Also on the bill are live act B>E>A>K, not to be missed with each member brightly colour coordinated and masked for high-energy performances! Consisting of former members of Field Music and Coal Train expect the audience to be jumping out of their booths and onto the tables.
The Haircut 100 singer Nick Heyward will also be stopping by for an afternoon tea gig, as Tim Burgess namesake Tim Burgess the Chainsaw Sculptor will be wowing audiences with his creations.
The Jukebox will be turned up loud, curated by Time Burgess and friends including The Black Cat DJs, The Beat Boutique, Alkertrax & Ceefax and many more.

Tim Peaks also provides the home to a new aspect to Kendal Calling this year with Q&A’s and book reading from celebrated authors with an emphasis on music literature. As well as a Q&A with Edwyn Collins they’ll be several others in store including one with Tim himself (whose recently released book Telling Stories has just gone to number 24 in the chart!). Burgess’s Q&A will be hosted by legendary Manchester DJ and critically acclaimed author Dave Haslam. As well as exclusive Q&A’s for music lovers to indulge in there will be book readings from the likes of Dave Haslam, music journalist and brother to two members of British Sea Power Roy Wilkinson. Roy will read extracts from Do It For Your Mum, a biography of British Sea Power and a memoir of his family. Many more are to be added to this unique line-up too.

There will also be giant live art in the form of a mosaic that revellers can help create during the 3 days! Meanwhile Marcus Hislop will be painting live canvasses and also on the bill will be poetry, book readings and special guests.

3 days and nights of fun in the fields in the beautiful Lake District

This year Kendal Calling unveil that the fancy dress theme will be Fairy Tales & Comic Books, a magical all encompassing theme that will see the site transform on Saturday, with the entire congregation encouraged to get involved! For the third year, Kendal Calling reveal a fancy dress theme that has been a huge success in previous years with revellers showing incredible innovation and imagination in designing and donning costumes.

Getting dressed up for a festival is all about becoming another version of you, an exaggerated, bold and colourful character. So this year we are transforming the Deer Park into another world with our theme Fairy Tales & Comic Books.

With the backdrop of the stunning Lake District, Kendal Calling expects to see everyone from the pied piper to Wolverine, Little Red Riding Hood to Catwoman, the Gingerbread to Tin Tin all partying together and this years theme will make the event even more of a surreal wonderland of fun and frolics than ever before.

The fun and frolics continues at Kendal Calling in the crazy world of the Happy Slap Boutique. This area will be like no other and is where anything goes, and is the home of electro swing and eclectic music. A haven to transform into creatures and characters, the Happy Slap face-painting boutique will get revelers ready to be immersed in magical worlds, dazzled by spectacular cabaret shows, wowed by our travelling circus and entertained in ways you never thought possible.

Happy Slap Boutique present a world of fairy tales and mischief full of secrets to explore and discover, keeping the entertainment going all weekend. Bump into Jack Sprat, a narcoleptic sleeping beauty or climb up Rapunzel’s hair and witness their take on your classic fairy tales. Performers will be traveling around the festival doing walk-about performance where it’s least expected with music, song, dance and ridiculousness.

As night falls, Happy Slap Boutique transforms into a plethora of circus, fire and glow performances alongside clowning, grotesque burlesque, world famous ‘Rave Aerobics’ and surprise acts that keep buzzing all night. DJs Ocelus, Tom Excell, Dan The Hat, Wolfie Rassmatazz, Magic Lantern, Vinyl Rights Experience, Mikey J & very special guests will spin a genre defying mix of electro swing, jungle, balkan, breakbeat, house & electro. The only music we can guarantee are upbeat party tunes. Check out Happy Slap Radio for exclusive mixes.

Just come back from Leuven – went out with the camera to take some night photos the city – with buildings all lit up etc…

Tomorrow there is a commemorative service for to mourn the loss of the lives of the children in the tragic coach accident last week.

There were TV crews, large screen TV’s and security measures put in place – alongside the candles, messages of good will and condolences, flowers and gifts to mark this sad occurrence.

A previous time I was in Leuven was for the Canonization of Damian. Similar set up in the city….but for a wholly different reason.

Sad times.

I arrived in Belgium on Saturday at Marleen and Bart’s house after a 6 hour drive from home to Dover for the 8 o’clock ferry.
After grabbing a short nap in the ferry queue and another on the ferry, a quick bowl of soup and hellos at Marleen and Bart’s, we travelled the short distance to L’ist W’aar in Oud Haverlee for set up and sound check with Martyn Joseph.

All went well and it was great to meet up with Jorus, Christ, Diethard, Hietre and the children and then back to Marleen’s for the 6 Nation’s Wales v France game – needless to say Martyn was really happy with the result!

Morecambe FC also won which took us to 50 points and projected safety in League 2 football!

The gig went exceptionally well with a great atmosphere considering the horrific coach crash in Switzerland earlier in the week.

A trip out yesterday after Martyn and Nikki set off to Germany for his first solo gig in a good number of years there – 300+ audience were exstatic and gave a standing ovation – a good start to playing in Germany!

Marleen, Bart and I went off to Wallonia, a French speaking part of Belgium and had a look around an 12th Century abbey before going on to the Waterloo battle fields.

I’m about to set off to The Atomium’ just outside Brussels now and will meet up at the gig tonight in Ingelmunster.

More to follow…

So, Bruce’s new album arrived yesterday and after a couple of run throughs- I like!!

Tickets booked to see him in Mnachester in the summer and a good few months to really get into this album with its’ songs of social commentary, tales of injustice and feelings and emotions.

Typical Bruce, in a good way. with strong tunes to accompany the lyrics.
The E-Street Band (Less Clarence- RIP) will create a great atmosphere but I`m sure many a “tip of the hat” in the direction of the big man will be evident.

Lovely sentiment at the end of the sleeve notes on the album…
